AMA Clinic’s resident hair loss specialist Sophia talks about hair loss

Thinning or damaged hair can be extremely stressful, especially if you don’t know what’s causing it. And, while a large number of people suffer from hair problems, the causes can differ massively from person-to-person.

Understanding the underlying force behind any hair issue is always the most crucial aspect of any treatment; without proper analysis, treatment will very rarely work.

Hair loss – the facts

Most people normally shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. This usually doesn’t cause noticeable thinning of scalp hair because new hair is growing in at the same time. Hair loss occurs when this cycle of hair growth and shedding is disrupted or when the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with scar tissue.
The exact cause of hair loss may not be fully understood, but it’s usually related to one or more of the following factors:

  • Family history (heredity)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Medical conditions
  • Medications
The majority of men suffer from something called androgenic alopecia – or as it’s more commonly known male pattern baldness – however diagnosis in women is not always as straight forward. Hair cells are amongst the most sensitive in the body, and contributing factors can include anything from stress and hormone levels, to diet or underlying illness. Without understanding what’s behind the problem, many patients invest a lot of money in products or treatments that never bring any real results.
Common problems with the scalp and hair include (but are not limited to): inadequate nutrition or dietary gaps, illness, traction alopecia, thyroid dysfunction, damage after chemotherapy treatment, hormone imbalance, menopause, genetic issues, follicle sensitivity, or stress.

Hair loss – treatment options

The two first line medications in treatment of male pattern baldness are minoxidil (Regaine) and finasteride (Propecia). Both are recommended as first-line treatment for male pattern baldness. They may also be used simultaneously when hair loss is progressive or further regrowth is desired after 12 months. A number of other medications used commonly off-label are dutasteride and ketoconazole, and in female androgenic alopecia spironolactone and flutamide. Combinations of finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole are more effective than individual use, suggesting synergistic effects of the medications.
Most vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies have not been medically proven to be effective. However, many topical preparations to help clean and condition the scalp and hair have been sown to be beneficial in aiding other treatments to work more effectively.

Saw palmetto is one of the few natural materials that have shown to be effective in treating hair loss.

LLLT is a viable option for growing hair in those afflicted with androgenetic alopecia-inherited male pattern hair loss. It is not intended to treat hair loss due to other factors.
In treating androgenetic alopecia with LLLT, physicians have found that LLLT is most effective in persons with minimal to moderate hair loss. Individual responses to LLLT differ, and results do vary from person to person.

The hair growth cycle consists of three phases: growth (anagen phase), resting (telogen phase) and shedding (catagen phase). Hair loss in androgenetic alopecia depends on a testosterone derivative in the skin, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Low level laser therapy is believed to increase blood flow in the scalp and stimulate metabolism in catagen or telogen follicles, resulting in the production of anagen hair.
